One of the most frightening times in a parents’ life is when their kids begin to drive. The parents know that they will face any number of situations for which no formal education could have prepared them. The parents also know their kids have a FALSE SENSE OF INVINCIBILITY.
The same thing holds true for us and God. God knows that they we will face any number of situations for which no formal education could have prepared us. As is the case with a new driver, our self-sufficiency, a form of adolescent ignorance, is probably the most difficult thing we have to overcome, simply because it’s invisible. As we know from driving and life, even when following the rules, accidents do happen.
7 FACTS
1. YOU ARE NOT AN ACCIDENT – we tend to either blame others or ourselves when bad things happen.
2. LIFE’S ACCIDENTS ARE REAL & OFTEN PAINFUL -- Why is so much of life broken around me? Confusion occurs when we mistakenly accept the crazy stuff surrounding us. Can the brokenness of the world get inside of me? Sure. Do I have a choice in this? YES!
3. WHAT DO I DO WHEN THE BROKENNESS OF THE WORLD IS GETTING TO ME? Pro 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding.
4. SOMETIMES I AM THE ONE CONTRIBUTING TO THE BROKENNESS IN MY LIFE? Pro 3:6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight. One of the best features of prayer is that it gets us listening.
5. YOU CAN’T BRIBE GOD WITH GOOD WORKS. Psa 51:16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
6. JESUS’ MINISTRY WAS TO THE BROKEN, WHICH QUALIFIES US ALL – the only folks that Jesus had a hard time with were the people that had it all together: the religious folks and the rich; both thought they didn’t need God to get to God. Psa 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
7. PRAYER IS A LANGUAGE THAT WE LEARN BY LISTENING TO OTHER PEOPLE DO IT People wouldn’t listen to you or pay attention to you unless you learned to communicate in the language of the floor. The same thing is true with prayer. Here is a great example found in 1 Chron 4:9-10: 1Ch 4:9 And Jabez was more honorable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow. And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou would bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that your hand might be with me, and that thou would keep [me] from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.
