Sample schedule for a Day Alone with God
8:00- 9:00 am - Prepare your mind and heart to encounter God. This might start with resting in a chair or taking a walk. The goal is to make whatever arrangements necessary so that the silence of the day will provide enough room to awaken your heart to hear from the Lord.
9:00 - 11:00 am: Select a chapter or verse of scripture. Writing often works as a focus tool. If you're like most, writing helps to distill the thoughts and feelings of the moment. Psalm 46 is a great Psalm to integrate into this portion of your Time With God (TWG). Writing has a subliminal effect of creating space for expectation. Journals are great resources and tools to bring on your TWG. By writing it down, there is a form that comes to the situation, idea or event that our minds often just do not see at the time.
Other exercises could be meditation on some verse of scripture. I recommend meditation before memorization, since it is easier to memorize something that is already in you than something that is only on the exterior.
11:00-Noon: Write out your responses and insights that you have had to the scripture and then speak to the Lord about them. Listen. Expect to hear an answer, but make sure that the hearing apparatus, the heart, is prepared to receive. During this time, doing a Daily Office is probably a great way of centering on the heart of God.
Noon- 1:00 pm: Eat. Walk, DON'T CHECK YOUR EMAIL. MAKE SURE YOUR CELL PHONE IS OFF.
1:00-2:00 pm: Some suggest taking a nap, listening to some worship music or if you are in a rustic setting, taking a walk and taking in the sounds of countryside.
2:00- 3:00 pm: By this time, there might be some headlines of the heart that you may want to record. The Lord may have asked you to do something when you get back. Take a moment to record it, and then continue listening, meditating on any scripture. This is a perfect time to do a Daily Office.
3:00 - 4:00 pm: Take a passage of scripture and read it, and meditate on it. Do an Office. Pray over your Rule of Life. Ask the Lord if there was anything that you didn't cover.
4:00 - 4:30 pm: Prepare to reenter the stream of your life. Celebrate your time with the Lord.
